The Bendigo Volleyball Association conducted its Spring Grand Finals last night with teams enjoying the cooler weather as they battled for the honour of being champions of their respective divisions.
In senior matches the Mixed Social Division crowned new Premiers as Golden Square Wolverines led by Tom Stevens, Ron Symons and Sally McInerney defeated the Diggers who were well served by Brett Whittle and Greg Hiscock.
The Men's Division 2 Final saw BVA life member Gary Cleaver take to the court for the final time with Golden Square Hawks. After a 932 matches in the BVA, Cleaver is calling it quits and his side made the match memorable for him defeating the highly fancied Kanyana Sioux 3 sets to 1. Rod Skidmore and Andrew Trewartha battle hard for Kanyana but the attack of Golden Square with Leigh Gordon and Brad Kilcullen were too much for the side to handle.

Gary Cleaver addresses the Golden Square Hawks in his 932 and final game in the BVA.
Gary annouced his retirement at the successful end of a long and distinguished career.
In Men's Division 1 Tsunami took to the court against Phantoms Gold. The Phantoms side had many attacking options with Todd Broadbent and James Winzar spiking well early, but with Tsunami's attack led by Tom Longford both sides were neck and neck during what was an entertaining match. Ben Hughes set well for Phantoms, while Jeremy Ross, Luke Staley and Andrew Spitty toiled hard for Tsunami. After winning the first set Phantoms lost their way and were comfortably defeated in the second set which saw the match all tied up. The younger Phantoms side however lifted and went on to take the next two sets and the match 3 sets to 1.
The closest senior match of the night was in Women's Division 2, where Girton Hippies faced off against Bendigo Senior. After finishing on top of the ladder the Girton side went into the match as favourites with Laura Sheather and Greta Faulkner the players to watch. However after some great play from Hilary Thompson Bendigo Senior won the first set 29-27. The two sides traded sets for the rest of the match sending the game into a deciding fifth set. Girton jumped out of the blocks in the fifth and went on to win a tight match 15-12 in the final set.
In the final match for the night Golden Square took to court 1 to play Girton Wildcats. The match promised some powerful spiking with Rhiannon Judd and Tahnee Woods in form for the Girton side, while Frida Schoo and Chelsea Haw would team well for Golden Square. The two sides went point for point during the first set with Golden Squares steady play winning them the set and the momentum to carry into the rest of the match. Mia Brewin battled hard for Girton in her last match for the school side, while the experience of Kellie Houlahan and Nicole Lindsay helped the Golden Square side record a 3 set to nil victory.
The BVA will now break for the holiday period with many players now looking to the Australian Volleyball (National) Schools Cup Tournament to be held in Melbourne at the start of December. Players will resume rivalries in February and any new players should contact the Schweppes Centre for more details. A registration night will be held in early February for prospective players seeking teams to play with.
